This book introduces the four operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, along with counting and other basic skills. It can be used to guide your teaching for about two years - through grades 1 and 2. It goes farther than the average second grade course, but with Ray's mental system many second graders are able to do this work.

Carolyn's comments:
Ray's Primary Arithmetic is designed for the parent or teacher to use. It contains both procedures (algorithms) and numerous practice problems both oral and written. In the days of the one-room school house, the teacher would give children oral exercises out of Ray's and put a few problems on the board for children to copy onto their slates. Thus, this is not a book that you hand to a first or second grader to do. Mott Media has produced a series of workbooks to go along with Primary Arithmetic which you can use along with this hard cover volume and the one following, Ray's Intellectual Arithmetic up until about fourth grade. See the list of related products below.

One unique feature of Ray's Primary Arithmetic is that it explains and uses procedures to make arithmetic calculations easier. There is more than one way to add and subtract and it seems that American publishers in the last hundred years have eliminated the easiest and fastest procedures in favor of methods that are far more difficult and error-prone. You can teach Ray's Arithmetic using the conventional methods that you know, if you wish, but if you are willing to try different methods that are easier and faster, they are there for you to learn in Ray's Arithmetic.
